Jürgen Klopp has coached England’s Liverpool since October 2015. The club have performed admirably during his “reign”. Klopp’s tactics are simple – he brings some really strong and talented players onto the pitch. Furthermore, he does not just take everyone but those “stars” who can be instrumental to the club’s triumph.
Today, the team features Virgil van Dijk, Luis Diaw and a host of other classy players known around Europe and the world. However, despite Jurgen’s talent for making the right and lucrative transfers, there are also quite a few whom he has failed to “get” into the club.
The German has long expressed a desire to become part of the English team. He hinted strongly in the summer of 2020 that he was ready to join its ranks and the club considered buying him from RB Leipzig. But the pandemic disrupted all plans. The club still refused to buy the German, so he was moved to Chelsea.
The Brazilian national team player could be the club’s first major acquisition since Jürgen Klopp took over as coach. At the time, Alex Teixeira was playing for Shakhtar Donetsk but has openly declared his desire to join the ranks of Liverpool. Negotiations were going well but in the end the Merseysiders refused to pay £38m for the Brazilian.
One of Jurgen Klopp’s initial goals as the new Merseyside manager was to improve the quality of the game. This mainly concerned the flanks. Klopp’s intention was to fix that problem with Ousmane Dembele. Jurgen became increasingly interested in the player as he demonstrated his impressive play at Rennes. But in the end, Dembele signed for Borussia Dortmund.
The Merseyside’s loss in the 2016 Europa League final showed where there are lapses in terms of team play and which ‘holes’ need to be plugged. So Liverpool needed an upgrade of their left wing defence. Ben Chillwell, playing for Leicester City at the time, became a contender. A sum of £10m was announced during talks, but it proved to be high in this situation.
The talented Pole impressed Klopp and the team with his games for Empoli in Serie A. Piotr played on loan. Jurgen did meet with Zielinski in 2016 to discuss a potential partnership. As a result of the talks, preparations for the transfer began. Polish television even showed Piotr wearing a Liverpool shirt.
But the midfielder did not join the ranks of the Merseysiders. The reason for that was rather difficult negotiations with Udinese. They ended with Zielinski set off to Napoli. “Liverpool, on the other hand, have got Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle, who cost the club £25m.
Borussia Mönchengladbach’s midfielder was Klopp’s target as the coach worked hard to strengthen his defence. But the English side failed to acquire Daoud. The potential deal was valued at £25m.
In 2018, Liverpool were preparing to shell out £53m to make Fekir a member of the squad and replace Philippe Coutinho. Everything was going great and the lad was gearing up for a new future, but at the very last minute it all fell through. The reason cited was the Merseyside side’s concerns over Nabil’s health, and more specifically his knee. Liverpool decided to refuse to buy the midfielder immediately after a medical examination.
